Here’s what I didn’t know.
Your skin is your largest organ.
Okay, maybe I knew that…
But, I had never given it much thought. I had spent a lot of years focused on what I put IN my body, but never really what I put ON it or the impact those products might have on my health.
I think I assumed that because I was using minimal, simple products…things that were for ‘sensitive skin’, ‘non-comedogenic’, ‘natural’, ‘organic’… that I was doing good. Nothing to worry about.
What really shocked me, though, was learning that the United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.
That means when WWII ended & we had that era of science & innovation & new products & chemicals…well, no one was keeping an eye on that. No one was even asking really.
There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don’t have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skincare and beauty industry.
I guess I assumed that at some level, FDA or some agency somewhere kept tabs on some kind of process of approval or review on product ingredients?
Nope!
In fact, FDA doesn’t have the authority to remove harmful ingredients or to recall a product. Some products that are being sued right now, are still on the shelf. It’s kind of crazy! (Okay, it’s totally crazy!)
We now know that serious health issues like asthma, cancer, obesity & infertility are on the rise. Science shows that this is due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals – in a homes, cars, food, cleaning products, furniture, etc.
And, we are starting to wise up on this.
In fact, today, clean beauty is one of the fastest-growing segments of the consumer market. People are looking for cleaner, safer products.
Problem is – there is nothing that defines that. ‘Natural’, ‘organic’, ‘clean’…are words any company can use – which, of course, leads to a lot of greenwashing & confusion.
When I started working with Beautycounter over 6 years ago, people were hardly even aware of ‘clean beauty’ or the need. Today, it’s becoming very mainstream. In fact, ‘Beautycounter’ was the #1 trending beauty brand in 2018 according to Google. That’s quite a shift!
I decided to partner with Beautycounter because it’s an education first, product second company. They are mission-driven & the mission goes beyond the company… ‘to get safer products into the hands of everyone ‘. That’s a mission anyone can get behind.
I love that we are engaging our clients & salesforce as a movement – like an army of activists – ready to be mobilized at any moment. Ready to step up, use our voice & demand better.
Wherever you are on your journey to live a healthier life, I hope clean beauty is at the top of your list. I hope you are reading labels & being very conscious about what you put on your skin. (And, if you have any connection to kids or teens…I hope you’re speaking up for them, too. Products targeted to them are often among the worst offenders!)
I highly recommend using the Healthy Living app and The NEVER List to guide your choices.
If you’re ready to make some clean swaps. To learn more about the products you’re using. To get involved in a movement that is on the right side of history. I’m here to help.
